Lion's Day Thanksgiving
About Lion Day Thanksgiving
Since the Edo period, Mito Daikagura has held a "Lion Festival" at New Year's to express gratitude and appreciation to the lion. Since Yanagiya Katsuzo took over as head of the family, aside from the New Year's "Lion Festival," a lion dance has been dedicated to the altar on April 4th each year to pray for good fortune for the parishioners. In recent years, the "Lion Day Thanksgiving Festival" has been held with the hope that Mito Daikagura will enrich the lives of the parishioners and provide them with nourishment for their daily lives.
The "Lion Day Thanksgiving Festival" offers a variety of entertainment, including lion dances, acrobatics, comedy routines, and attractions featuring special guests. At the end of the festival, there will be a big raffle with prizes and a rock-paper-scissors tournament with Mito Mayor Takahashi Yasushi, and many other events for visitors to enjoy.
We invite many of our parishioners and followers, as well as some of our loyal customers, and we have around 400 visitors every year.
